I am a soca party blogger from New York City. My Guyanese heritage and passion for soca music led me to create a blog to demystify fetes and Carnivals by introducing neophytes to the artistes, deejays, and mas bands making headlines in the industry.
My love for all things Carnival started with my first Trinidad Carnival experience. In 2001, I studied “Trinidad Carnival, Culture, and History” at the University of the West Indies with Dr. Milla Riggio and playwright Tony Hall. My five-month study included lectures by author Earl Lovelace, an internship at The Trinidad and Tobago Review with Lloyd Best, a course on West Indian literature taught by activist Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh, j’ouvert with rapso band 3 Canal, and jumping up in Peter Minshall’s mas band on Carnival Tuesday. This trip changed my life. Now, I encourage those who may not know about the music, the artistry, or the culture to experience them with me.
